Law is a system of rules, usually enforced through a set of institutions. It shapes politics, economics and society in numerous ways and serves as a primary social mediator in relations between people. Contract law regulates everything from buying a bus ticket to trading on derivatives markets. Property law defines rights and obligations related to the transfer and title of personal (often referred to as chattel) and real property. Trust law applies to assets held for investment and financial security, while tort law allows claims for compensation if a person's rights or property are harmed (often considered civil case if filed under an issue of tort law vs. criminal). If the harm is criminalised in penal code, criminal law offers means by which the state can prosecute the perpetrator. Constitutional law provides a framework for the creation of law, the protection of human rights and the election of political representatives. Administrative law is used to review the decisions of government agencies, while international law governs affairs between sovereign nation states in activities ranging from trade to environmental regulation or military action. Writing in 350 BC, the Greek philosopher Aristotle declared, "The rule of law is better than the rule of any individual."

Legal systems elaborate rights and responsibilities in a variety of ways. A general distinction can be made between civil law jurisdictions, which codify their laws, and common law systems, where judge made law is not consolidated. In some countries, religion still informs the law. Law provides a rich source of scholarly inquiry, into legal history, philosophy, economic analysis or sociology. Law also raises important and complex issues concerning equality, fairness and justice. "In its majestic equality", said the author Anatole France in 1894, "the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal loaves of bread." In a typical democracy, the central institutions for interpreting and creating law are the three main branches of government, namely an impartial judiciary, a democratic legislature, and an accountable executive. To implement and enforce the law and provide services to the public, a government's bureaucracy, the military and police are vital. While all these organs of the state are creatures created and bound by law, an independent legal profession and a vibrant civil society inform and support their progress.

What law career should i pursue to be able to use languages: International Law?
Q. I am interested in law school once I finish college, but I want to practice some kind of law where I would get to use languages. I am working on my French fluency and am also studying Chinese. What is the best field? I am not particularly interested in Public International Law, but am interested in International Business Law. I am not interested in living abroad or travelling every week of the year, but more of something where I would travel once in a while to other countries to negotiate deals, etc. Do most firms have lawyers who specialize in dealings abroad, and would they actually use languages?

A. In New York, criminal law fills the bill...people who speak 100 different languages live here , probably the same in most big cities...

What law requires you to report the finding of a dead body to the police?
Q. Well I just asked another question on whether it's against the law to not report a body you found to the police. Therefore my next question, since so many people think there is such a law, what law is it? Specifically.

A. In the state of Texas (May differ slightly from state to state) Texas Penal Code states in 37.09 an offense under subsection(2) is a class A misdemeanor (2) observes a human corpse under circumstances in which a reasonable person would believe that an offense had been committed, knows or reasonably should know that a law enforcement agency is not aware of the existence of or location of the corpse, and fails to report the existence of and location of the corpse to law enforcement agency.

What law defines what is a hard or soft pull on your credit report?
Q. As everyone knows there are hard and soft pulls on your credit report. Exactly what law defines what constitutes a pull as hard or soft? Is it a law, or just common practice for credit bureaus to determine what classifies each one?
Asked by SaraGirlNY - Fri Aug 28 17:44:32 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The only time someone can do a hard pull is when you have actually applied for credit or asked for a increase in a existing credit card limit. Everything else is a soft pull.

  • The one great principle of the English law is, to make business for itself.
  • The rule of law can be wiped out in one misguided, however will-intentioned generation. And if that should happen, it could take a century of striving and ordeal to restore it, and then only at the cost of the lives of many good men and women.
  • The law is a sort of hocus-pocus science, that smiles in yer face while it picks yer pocket; and the glorious uncertainty of it is of mair use to the professors than the justice of it.
