From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Oceania (sometimes Oceanica) is a geographical, often geopolitical, region consisting of numerous lands—mostly islands in the Pacific Ocean and vicinity. The term "Oceania" was coined in 1831 by French explorer Dumont d'Urville. The term is used today in many languages to define one of the continents and is one of eight terrestrial ecozones. The boundaries of Oceania are defined in a number of ways. Most definitions recognize parts of Australasia such as Australia, New Zealand, and New Guinea, and all or part of the Malay Archipelago as being parts of Oceania. Ethnologically, the islands that are included in Oceania are divided into the subregions of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by unknown - Wed May 13 01:29:37 2009 Why do people refer to Australia, Indonesia, and New Zealand as Oceania? Q. Oceania is not a continent, because Indonesia is part of Asia and New Zealand is part of Australia (at least I think so). Asked by Miss Shelley =) - Tue Jul 21 15:17:03 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Oceania is not a continent but a REGION. So Oceania (when referring to it as a region- consists of the continent of Australia, Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, New Guinea, and New Zealand. e.g. Hawaii is not part of the continent of North America, but is included in the REGION of North America. Q. Can someone please tell me what the difference is between Oceania and Australasia? Asked by Stormbash - Thu Apr 10 07:58:03 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I always thought of them as the same. But the definitions below give me a slightly different sense of them. Mostly that "Australasia" is a slightly narrower definition/area, focusing mostly on Australia and the islands closest to it. Calling it Australasia acknowledges the fact that Australia is the largest landmass of the Oceania region. There is a slight difference in looking at the two definitions I am referencing for you below. The Australasia one seems to definitely focus on the Australia part of things. Oceania is being more...inclusive, a wider area of the Pacific Answered by SAMMY - Thu Apr 10 08:20:09 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Oceania" |
