Germany ( / ˈ dʒ ɜr m ən i /), officially the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, pronounced [ˈbʊndəsʁepuˌbliːk ˈdɔʏtʃlant] ( listen)), is a country in Central Europe. It is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; to the south by Austria and Switzerland; and to the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The territory of Germany covers 357,021 square kilometers (137,847 sq mi) and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 81.8 million inhabitants in 2010, it has the largest population among member states of the European Union, and it is home to the third-largest number of international migrants worldwide.

A region named Germania, inhabited by several Germanic peoples, has been known and documented before AD 100. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire, which lasted until 1806. During the 16th century, northern Germany became the centre of the Protestant Reformation. As a modern nation-state, the country was first unified amidst the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. After World War II, Germany was divided in 1949 into two separate states—East Germany and West Germany—along the lines of Allied occupation. Germany was reunified in 1990 upon the entry of the German Democratic Republic into the Federal Republic. West Germany was a founding member of the European Community (EC) in 1957, which became the European Union in 1993. It is part of the Schengen Area and adopted the European currency, the euro, in 1999.

Germany is a federal parliamentary republic of sixteen states (Bundesländer). The capital and largest city is Berlin. Germany is a member of the United Nations, NATO, G8, G20, and the OECD. It is a major power with the world's fourth largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth largest in purchasing power parity. It is the second largest exporter and third largest importer of goods. In absolute terms, Germany allocates the second biggest annual budget of development aid in the world, while its military expenditure ranked seventh. The country has developed a high standard of living and established a comprehensive system of social security. It holds a key position in European affairs and maintains a multitude of close partnerships on a global level. Germany is recognised as a scientific and technological leader in several fields.

How do you think Germany (and the world) would be different had the Nazis never came to power?
Q. And the Holocaust and WWII never happened? And Hitler got into art school and became an artist instead? I think, for one thing, that Germany would be the film capitol of the world today - the German expressionist films of the 20s and 30s were groundbreaking and when all the Jews from the film industry (and countless others who didn't support the Nazis) fled Germany for America it really helped make that golden age of Hollywood. Germany lost a ton of talent.

A. Sometimes I think this Hitler stuff is all research for the 'alternate world' novel that you want to write, whether you know it or not. You have just hit on a very rich vein here. You have just asked THE question. Instead of the usual 30 seconds, I have been typing & deleting, typing & deleting... Imagine a European Golden Age in the 30s & 40s, with the Jewish contribution not just cultural but scientific as well. Sounds wonderful, until nagging phrases like 'a Reich to last a thousand years' come into your head. Societies become decadent. Great civilizations make enemies. What would have been the flies in the ointment ? What would all this have meant for America ? What would have been the cultural significance of Charlie Chaplin's funny… [cont.]

A. Thats the whole point! the other countries knew that Germany couldn't pay for all the damage that they have done, so that was supposed to teach them to NOT do the damages that they could end up paying for l8r. ya. and they had to export all there goods, and they couldn't import any. thats just no good now, is it?

I heard the drinking age in Germany has changed to 18 for all alcohol. Is this true, can someone confirm?
Q. I have a friend in Germany who said that the laws have changed and the age is now 18 (instead of 16) for alcohol. However, he is very new to the country and speaks terrible German. Can someone more knowledgeable help me out?

A. I live in Germany and know for fact that its still 16+, but will be changing to 18+ on the 1st January, 08. They have already wanted to do this since 2003 as far as I can remember, but got to many protests against it. so yeah, If your friend isn't 18, I'd advise him to live it up till the shortly coming 2008 new law. good luck;)
