North America is the northern continent of the Americas, situated in the Earth's northern hemisphere and almost totally in the western hemisphere. It is bordered on the north by the Arctic Ocean, on the east by the North Atlantic Ocean, on the southeast by the Caribbean Sea, and on the west by the North Pacific Ocean; South America lies to the southeast. North America covers an area of about 24,709,000 square kilometers (9,540,000 square miles), about 4.8% of the planet's surface or about 16.5% of its land area. As of July 2008, its population was estimated at nearly 529 million people. It is the third-largest continent in area, following Asia and Africa, and the fourth in population after Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Q. Assume scientists know the rate at which N. America & Eurasia are drifting farther apart on their respective continental plates. How might scientists determine when North America seperated from Eurasia during the breakup of Pangaea?

A. Assume that the rate at which N. America and Eurasia are drifting apart has and will remain constant. To determine when the continents separated you'd: current distance between continents / rate of drift = time (ago) So for instance (made up numbers): (2000 miles) / (1 mile/year) = 2000 years remember...that's 2000 years ago. You have to subtract the number of years from the current year to get the specific point in time.

A. The Appalachian Mountains became the border of the 13 colonies because it was hard to get over them. Would you want to climb over those? About 150 years into the first settlements some brave peeps went over and came into French Territory. ouch. Better to stay by the river than to cross them. Those rivers are huge!!! But later it became a way of transportation!!! They lived more towards the south because it was warmer and had more rain. Better for farming. did i help?

A. That's hard to imagine, but I suspect that once secession proved to be a possibility, alot of other states, whenever they didnt like something from the federal government, would simply leave the union, and declare itself independent. Then even individual states would have counties and cities simply declaring themselves independent. Eventually, we might have hundreds of individual kingdoms, ruled by a monarch or whoever happened to be strongest. The powers of Europe would see this as an opportunity to wage war on some of the individual kingdoms and we would revert back to being colonies of some imperial nation. It would be a land of chaos, until some dictator took us over and subject us to his whims.
