Australia (pronounced /əˈstreɪljə/ ə-STRAYL-yə or /ɒˈstreɪljə/ o-STRAYL-yə, or more formally as /ɔːˈstreɪliə/ aw-STRAY-lee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the continental mainland (the world's smallest), the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the southeast.

For some 40,000 years before European settlement commenced in the late 18th century, the Australian mainland and Tasmania were inhabited by around 250 individual nations of indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north, and European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored, and during the 19th century another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established.

On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth realm. The population is 22.0 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

Australia is a developed country, with a prosperous multicultural society and has excellent results in many international comparisons of national performance such as health care, life expectancy, quality of life, human development, public education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australian cities routinely rank among the world's highest in terms of cultural offerings and quality of life. It is a member of the United Nations, G-20 major economies, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, OECD, and the WTO.

Are nurses in Australia well compensated? How much is the average salary in a month/year?
Q. I am planning to apply for Australia because I heard that it's a good place to live too. But my employer in UK already contacted me. I am still undecided as to whether I accept the job in UK or not. If Australia offers a good salary & benefits, then I would go there instead of UK. Please help me decide!

A. Most nurses in Australia believe they are not well compensated, given their work duties and responsibilities. Benefits may include free uniforms and a small laundry allowance, and subsidised meals. Income is around $65,000 per year.

Why do the seasons in Australia start on the 1st day of the month as opposed to the 21st, everywhere else?
Q. I've always wondered why in Australia the seasons start on the 1st of every third month as opposed to most other countries I know of that start on the 21st of every third month. Eg. Summer in Australia starts on the 1st of December. However winter in the Northern hemisphere doesn't begin until the 21st of December. Shouldn't summer begin on the 21st of December as well? Are there any other countries that do this as well? And if so why? Which is the correct date?

A. Australia apparently uses meteorological seasons rather than astronomical seasons. The December-February period is the coldest (or warmest) three calendar months of the year, and so from a weather standpoint that's the winter (summer) season. The traditional seasons are based on the Sun's apparent motion in the sky; the dates are somewhat variable year to year and slowly changing due to precession of the equinoxes. One system is no more "right" than the other; they're just based on different sets of observations. If you're interested in weather patterns, the meteorological definition is more appropriate; for astronomical work, the traditional definition is better.
