Most defense attorneys do not do hourly billing but charge by the case for the specific case and any filing etc fees. It is what the traffic will bear and the type of crime involved. For a simple traffic ticket a little, DUI a lot more, second DUI even more. A shoplifting which will be resolved in one appearance a little. A murder which will go to trial and have a lot of motions, a lot. Good defense attorneys that have developed a reputation make a lot of money. Public defenders make about the same as a prosecutor or senior cop does (like prosecutors/cops most don't take the job just for the money).
