Are immigration officers allowed to search and read everything you have?
Q. Sammy was crossing at the us and mexican border to visit on a b1/b2 visa. Had no idea it would so much trouble when she visit very easily at the airport. The woman search everything and read everything and then cancelled her visa. The immigration officer had no idea what she was doing and was asking everyone for help. The other immigration officers did not agree to what she was doing and still allowed Sammy to go across. Thanks Fred S. This happen a couple years ago but she now have permanent residency, but encourages visitors to fly.

What can the average American do about illegal immigration issues?
Q. I think it's pretty obvious by now that illegal immigration hurts any country (whether it's the U.S. or the U.K.) in many ways. I am all for stopping illegal immigration, and doing it humanely, but it seems like our government is too focused on foreign problems. What can we as average citizens do to make our voices heard on this issue? Do we need to write our Senator, our Congressman, the President? How do we make our voices heard? I would like to align myself with an organization that is firm but not extreme. Frankly, some of the organizations that I've looked for on the net do seem racist, don't really seem to offer any solutions, and just seem content on complaining. I am all for a humane and fair way of handling this, but we've… [cont.]

A. I like your point of view, and it seems similar to mine. Illegal immigration is a problem that must be stopped, but we most do it intelligently and humanely, not with extreme measures. The key in solving the issue is in improving our immigration system referring not only to security, but also making it easier for people who want to come here, and legalizing those who are already here through a selective process. It's not about rewarding criminals, it is about avoiding another huge flood of illegal immigrants. I've always said that if we send twelve million home today, we will get twenty-four million back tomorrow. Also notice that this is NOT an amnesty, since border security would be strengthened severely, and all those who pass the… [cont.]

A. Check out immigration problems in the Netherlands. The issue there is so volatile, that a major politician was assassinated for it only a few years ago.

Immigration is the movement of people from one nation-state to another. While human migration has existed throughout human history, immigration implies long-term permanent residence (and often eventual citizenship) by the immigrants.

  • Treating human beings differently, simply because they were born on the opposite side of a national boundary, is hard to justify under any mainstream philosophical, religious or ethical theory.
  • The freedom to travel and to settle where one wishes, in pursuit of political freedom or economic opportunity, is among the most basic of human rights....The principal difference between the Irish peasants who once fled the potato blight on coffin ships, and the desperate Haitian rafters that our navy forcibly repatriates today, is bad timing.
