An island (pronounced /ˈaɪlənd/) or isle (/ˈaɪl/) is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, cays or keys. An island in a river or lake may be called an eyot, /ˈaɪ.ət/. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago. An island may still be described as such despite the presence of a land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island. There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands. There is no standard of size which distinguishes islands from islets and continents. From Google News Search: "islands" Which of the Hawaiian Island is most popular to visit while vacationing at the Hawaiian islands? Q. I am planning a trip to go to Hawaii this summer and I would like to know which of the Hawaiian islands is the most popular island to visit while vacationing there. Asked by Nick - Mon Feb 8 10:12:48 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Oahu is first, Maui second in total visitor arrivals (many visitors do land at HNL and immediately take a plane to other islands). Canadians are actually more likely to visit Maui, while Japanese tourists are much more likely to visit Oahu. Tourists come from Japan to golf and shop, and Honolulu's Ala Moana Shopping Center increasingly caters to Japanese shoppers in search of relative bargains in designer labels. 1,893,800 visitors arrived on Maui in 2009. 5,725 visitors came to Maui from Japan in December. 44,153 visited Maui from the US east coast, 75,992 from the west coast. Oahu's total arrivals were 4,032,198 in 2009. In December, 106,211 arrivals came from the west coast of the US, 80,226 from the east coast, 97,956 from Japan. Where can I find the exact number of islands that make up Fiji, including even the smallest ones? Asked by linda - Sun Aug 16 21:59:35 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I suggest that you believe what wiki says because it seem to be an authentic site: Fiji consists of 322 islands (of which 106 are inhabited) and 522 smaller islets. Q. Can someone give me a play by play on attacking islands in Medieval Total War? I can't seem to be able to attack them, and the Turkish took over Cyprus. Asked by JMS - Mon Dec 21 18:02:44 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hi there. In Medieval II: Total War, attacking settlements on Islands is very simple. Below is a clear step-by-step explanation on how to do so. 1. Select one of your cities that is built on a coastline. 2. Build a cog (standard boat), or any other type of vessel. This will appear at your port on the Campaign Map in the next few turns. 3. Hold down Crtl and left click on any infantry, cavalry or siege units garrisoned in your town. Move them into your ship by right clicking on it. 4. Direct the ship to the Island you wish to invade. If you hover the cursor over the Island's beach, you should see an icon appear eventually. This icon is a boat with a green arrow, and it means troops can be deployed in that area. 5.
