A lawyer, according to Black's Law Dictionary, is "a person learned in the law; as an attorney, counsel or solicitor; a person licensed to practice law." Law is the system of rules of conduct established by the sovereign government of a society to correct wrongs, maintain stability, and deliver justice. Working as a lawyer involves the practical application of abstract legal theories and knowledge to solve specific individualized problems, or to advance the interests of those who retain (i.e., hire) lawyers to perform legal services.

The role of the lawyer varies significantly across legal jurisdictions, and so it can be treated here in only the most general terms. More information is available in country-specific articles (see below).

A. you dont get a green card just by going to university in USA - you need a study visa so check out the USCIS website and see wnat you need to do to get a study visa. Note that you will need to have a LOT of money as you will be paying international fees and you have to PAY for all your own rent, food, clothes, books, transport, health care, entertainment, utilities etc After you graduate you must go home, and then apply to immigrate to USA you cannot immigrate while you are a student.

What type of lawyer would handle car manufacturer defects?
Q. I recently had some problems with my car in which I had to take it back to the local dealership and a special engineer flew in to diagnose it. They finally came to a conclusion saying it was a defected car and they're sending a proposal to buy it back. But if the proposal is too low or just unreasonable I plan on hiring a lawyer and sueing. What kind of lawyer would be right for this situation?

A. I've been in your shoes with the defective vehicle buyback (and I'm a lawyer)! My buyback process was great - I turned over my defective vehicle, and the dealership delivered the new car. (Obviously, there was quite a bit of paperwork to go along with that. Also, in my case, the dealership had actually had my car for 1 month prior to the buyback decision. During that time, various engineers flew out to look at it, and they tried to fix the software problem. Ultimately, it was deemed unsafe, so I never got that car back. I had it for 3 days when it went into the service department. To further complicate my situation, the vehicle I bought was a brand new model of car which had just been released. Supply could not keep up with demand,… [cont.]

A. Decide which state you want to practice. Go to that state's bar website, committee of bar examiners, or whichever board governs practice in the state in which you want to practice. Determine what the qualifications are for foreign attorneys to practice in that state. For example, in California, you want to go to the State Bar of California's website at: You can search on Admissions and find these sites: and and It will tell you what you need to do in order to practice law in California. As long as you were licensed as an attorney, solicitor, barrister in the UK, it looks like you need to take the California Bar Examination and pass the moral character process. You will probably also need to pass the Multistate Professional… [cont.]

Lawyers are people who practice law. In most countries, lawyers enter their profession through a period of specialized study. Lawyers are a frequent target of criticism, in part because they are often the public face of unscrupulous parties such as persons being tried for crimes, because they employ a specialized jargon which makes it difficult for persons without a legal education to receive the benefits of the legal system without hiring a lawyer, and because they make up a disproportionate percentage of politicians.

  • Is it not remarkable that the common repute which we all give to attorneys in the general is exactly opposite to that which every man gives to his own attorney in particular? Whom does anybody trust so implicitly as he trusts his own attorney? And yet is it not the case that the body of attorneys is supposed to be the most roguish body in existence?
  • [Lawyers] can make the worse appear the better cause, as though they were fresh from Leontine schools, and have been known to wrest from reluctant juries triumphant verdicts of acquittal for their clients, even when those clients, as often happens, were clearly and unmistakably innocent.
