If you are severely disabled it can be decided in a week or two. If you are denied and appeal, the case goes back to social security and it basically follows the same processs that an initial claim goes through. It will be reviewed by a different doctor and a different examiner. Again, it will usually be decided in 60-90 days. Then if you are denied and appeal it will go before a judge. This is the stage that a lawyer may be helpful, but still not necessary. It can take up to a year or two to get the hearing completed.
